Last of the Line: Sheila Stewart (Scotland 2007)

Born on July 7, 1937 in a stable that belonged to an hotel in Blairgowrie, Sheila Stewart grew up in a family of travelling people whose roots in Scotland have been traced back to the eleventh century and whose music and song gained world-wide renown during the folk music revival. Now in her seventies, ballad singer Sheila Stewart is the last in the line of the Stewarts of Blair, a long lineage of traditional travellers ballad singers and storytellers. Her final quest is to ensure that her ancient culture does not die with her. But it's not an easy battle, being a Traveller means Sheila is ignored on her own doorstep in the idyllic setting of Blairgowrie. The film, made by Dundonian filmmakers Blair Scott and Dylan Drummond, is a moving portrait about an outsider and a lament for a culture now lost.

The film will be followed by an audience with Sheila Stewart herself, an inimitable singer and raconteur.

The Hot Seats

Marryat Hall | 8pm | £12/£10 concession
| BOOK ONLINE

The Hot Seats
Crazy bluegrass scientists and Absurdist string band The Hot Seats have been together for seven years, fine-tuning their skills on the US redneck bar and college club circuit. Winners of a Herald Angel at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2008, and Fave Rave at Leicester's Summer Sundae Festival, we couldn't think of a better way to close Fest'n'Furious.

“The Hot Seats thrive on diversity . . . The action is virtually non-stop, the musicianship superb, with fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar coalescing with humour and speed and powered by a communally owned and played double-bass, drums and washboard.”
The Glasgow Herald, 2008

"BLUEGRASS, old-time, skiffle, jug band … stir them up vigorously, throwing in elements of zany vaudeville , add some unpredictable tics, then stand back and watch them go.”
The Edinburgh Scotsman, 2008
